What the vulnerability is
CVE-2023-22894 is a vulnerability in Strapi involving the cleartext storage of sensitive information (CWE-312). The flaw allows an attacker who has already gained access to the admin panel to use the query filter mechanism to discover sensitive user details. While this is primarily an information disclosure issue, it carries significant risk escalation: it can be chained with CVE-2023-22621 to achieve remote code execution (RCE).
Exposure and applicability
This vulnerability affects Strapi deployments where the admin panel is accessible. Organizations should note that impacted versions of the product may be end-of-life (EoL) or end-of-service (EoS), meaning official patches for those specific versions may no longer be available.
Applicability depends on two primary factors:
1. Admin Panel Access: The exposure path requires access to the admin panel query filter.
2. Version Status: Assets running EoL/EoS versions are at higher risk as they cannot be patched in place and must be transitioned.
Remediation priorities
Our analysis suggests prioritizing remediation based on the potential for RCE via the chain with CVE-2023-22621. Because some affected versions are EoL/EoS, traditional patching may not be an option for all assets.
Prioritized Actions:
* Inventory and Version Audit: Identify all Strapi instances and determine if they are running supported versions or EoL/EoS releases. This is the first step in deciding whether to patch or migrate.
* Transition to Supported Versions: For assets identified as EoL/EoS, our analysis recommends transitioning to a currently supported version of Strapi to eliminate the underlying vulnerability.
* Restrict Admin Panel Access: As the entry path requires admin panel access, limiting this interface to trusted internal networks or authenticated users could reduce the likelihood of an attacker reaching the query filter.
How to validate remediation
Verifying that exposure has been reduced requires more than a version check. While updating to a supported version is the primary corrective action, defenders should verify the result through the following methods:
* Configuration Audit: Confirm that EoL/EoS versions have been decommissioned and replaced by supported releases.
* Access Control Validation: Verify that the admin panel is not exposed to unauthorized networks or untrusted users, thereby breaking the initial exposure path.
Limits and open questions
There is residual risk if an organization continues to use EoL/EoS versions without available mitigations. Furthermore, because this vulnerability can be chained with CVE-2023-22621, remediation of CVE-2023-22894 alone may not fully eliminate the RCE risk if the second vulnerability remains present in the environment. It remains unknown which specific third-party implementations or open-source components incorporating Strapi are affected.
