Cisco Secure Email Gateway Arbitrary File Write (CVE-2026-76519)

Catalog analysis: CISA added this entry on October 14, 2026. The entry reflects catalog information retrieved on October 15, 2026, not a snapshot archived on the inclusion date. This site’s publication date is shown separately. Check current vendor guidance before acting.

What the vulnerability is

CVE-2026-76519 is a relative path traversal vulnerability (CWE-23) affecting the Cisco Secure Email Gateway. This flaw allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to write arbitrary files directly onto the underlying operating system of the affected device.

Exposure and applicability

This vulnerability applies to organizations deploying Cisco Secure Email Gateway assets that are exposed to remote network traffic. Because the exploit does not require authentication, any asset reachable by a potential attacker is at risk. The inclusion of this CVE in CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog indicates that the vulnerability has been observed in active exploitation, increasing the urgency for infrastructure owners to identify and secure these assets.

Remediation priorities

Based on our analysis, remediation should be prioritized by internet-facing exposure. We recommend the following sequence:

  1. Immediate Patching: Apply the mitigations provided in the vendor’s security advisory. This is the primary method to close the path traversal entry point.
  2. Forensic Triage: Because this vulnerability allows arbitrary file writes and has been exploited in the wild, patching alone does not confirm the system is clean. Defenders must perform forensic triage to determine if unauthorized files were placed on the OS prior to the update.
  3. Exposure Audit: Identify all instances of Cisco Secure Email Gateway across the environment to ensure no legacy or shadow infrastructure remains unpatched.

How to validate remediation

Verification must move beyond simple version checks. While confirming the installed software version matches the patched release is a necessary first step, it does not prove that the vulnerability was not already exploited.

To verify that exposure has been reduced and the system is secure, defenders should:
* Verify Patch Application: Confirm the update was successfully applied via vendor-approved management tools.
* Validate Forensic Results: Review logs and file system integrity checks as part of the required forensic triage to ensure no persistence mechanisms or malicious files remain from a prior compromise.

Limits and open questions

Applying the vendor’s fix addresses the path traversal mechanism but does not automatically remove artifacts left by an attacker who may have already gained access. There is residual risk if forensic triage is skipped or performed incompletely. Additionally, while CISA has flagged this for federal agencies with a specific deadline, non-federal organizations must determine their own risk tolerance and patching cadence based on their specific exposure.
