SysAid On-Prem XXE Vulnerability (CVE-2025-2776)

Historical catalog analysis: CISA added this entry on July 22, 2025. The entry reflects catalog information retrieved on August 31, 2026, not a snapshot archived on the inclusion date. Check current vendor guidance before acting.

What the vulnerability is

CVE-2025-2776 is an Improper Restriction of XML External Entity Reference (XXE) vulnerability (CWE-611) identified in SysAid On-Prem. The flaw exists within the Server URL processing functionality. If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to achieve administrator account takeover and utilize file read primitives to access sensitive data on the host system.

Exposure and applicability

This vulnerability specifically affects organizations deploying the on-premises version of SysAid. Because the flaw resides in how the server processes XML entities via its URL functionality, any asset running a susceptible version of the software is exposed to potential unauthorized administrative access and local file disclosure. Infrastructure owners should identify all instances of SysAid On-Prem within their environment to determine the scope of exposure.

Remediation priorities

Based on the reported impact, our analysis suggests the following prioritization for vulnerability management teams:

  1. Immediate Patching: The primary corrective action is to apply mitigations according to the vendor’s official instructions. Given the potential for full administrator takeover, this should be treated as a high-priority remediation task.
  2. Cloud Service Review: For organizations utilizing cloud-integrated components or services associated with this deployment, we recommend reviewing guidance consistent with BOD 22-01 to ensure external exposure is minimized.
  3. Decommissioning: In scenarios where vendor mitigations cannot be applied or are unavailable for a specific legacy version, the most effective way to reduce exposure is to discontinue use of the product.

How to validate remediation

To assure that the risk has been reduced, defenders must move beyond simple version checks. We recommend the following validation approach:

  • Vendor-Specific Verification: Follow the specific validation steps provided in the vendor’s documentation to confirm the fix is active and functioning as intended.
  • Configuration Audit: Verify that XML processing settings have been updated to restrict external entity references in accordance with the mitigation guide.
  • Evidence of Result: A successful remediation is evidenced by the inability of the Server URL processing functionality to resolve external entities, rather than the mere presence of a patched binary on the disk.

Limits and open questions

While the vulnerability is documented, there are remaining unknowns. It is currently unknown if this flaw has been leveraged in known ransomware campaigns. Additionally, while CISA has established a remediation deadline for federal agencies (2025-08-12), this date does not dictate the timeline for private sector organizations, though it serves as an indicator of urgency. Residual risk remains if compensating controls are used instead of a direct patch, as these may not fully eliminate the underlying XXE flaw.
