Authentication Bypass in TP-Link TL-WA855RE (CVE-2020-24363)

Historical catalog analysis: CISA added this entry on September 02, 2025. The entry reflects catalog information retrieved on August 31, 2026, not a snapshot archived on the inclusion date. Check current vendor guidance before acting.

What the vulnerability is

CVE-2020-24363 is a missing authentication for critical function vulnerability (CWE-306) affecting the TP-Link TL-WA855RE range extender. The flaw allows an unauthenticated attacker located on the same network to send a TDDP_RESET POST request to the device. This action triggers a factory reset and a subsequent reboot, which enables the attacker to establish unauthorized administrative access by setting a new password.

Exposure and applicability

This vulnerability applies specifically to organizations or home environments utilizing the TP-Link TL-WA855RE hardware. The exposure path is limited to attackers who already have network-level access to the device. Because this flaw allows for a complete takeover of the administrative interface, it represents a significant risk to the integrity of the local network segment where the extender is deployed.

Remediation priorities

Based on our analysis, remediation should prioritize the total removal of affected hardware from the environment. The source indicates that these products may be end-of-life (EoL) or end-of-service (EoS), meaning official security patches may no longer be produced by the vendor.

Our recommended priority sequence is as follows:
1. Hardware Decommissioning: Identify and remove all TL-WA855RE units from the network. This is the most reliable method of exposure reduction given the potential EoL status.
2. Vendor Mitigation Review: If decommissioning is not immediately possible, defenders should check for any available vendor-supplied mitigations or firmware updates, though these may be unavailable for EoS hardware.
3. Network Segmentation: As a temporary compensating control to limit damage, isolate range extenders on a separate VLAN to prevent an attacker from reaching the management interface of other critical infrastructure.

How to validate remediation

Verification must go beyond a simple inventory check. To prove that exposure has been reduced, defenders should employ the following methods:
* Physical and Logical Audit: Confirm the physical removal of the device or its permanent disconnection from the network fabric.
* Network Scanning: Perform an internal scan for the specific MAC address prefixes associated with the TL-WA855RE to ensure no unauthorized or forgotten units remain active on the wire.

Note that checking a firmware version is insufficient for validation if the vendor has not released a verified patch for this specific CVE.

Limits and open questions

There are significant limitations regarding the long-term security of this device. If the product is indeed EoL/EoS, no future patches will be issued to address this or other emerging vulnerabilities. Furthermore, it remains unknown whether this vulnerability has been utilized in known ransomware campaigns. The primary residual risk is that if the hardware is retained, the administrative interface remains fundamentally exposed to any actor with local network access.
